Shopify Payments charges a percentage plus a fixed $0.30 fee per transaction, and the percentage drops as you move up plans: 2.9% on Basic, 2.7% on Shopify/Grow, and 2.5% on Advanced. Higher-volume Plus merchants can negotiate custom rates around 2.45%.
If you use a third-party processor like Stripe or PayPal instead of Shopify Payments on a Shopify store, Shopify adds its own surcharge on top — 2% on Basic, 1% on the Shopify plan, 0.5% on Advanced. That's on top of whatever the third-party processor already charges, which is why almost all Shopify merchants use Shopify Payments directly.
An $80 sale on the Basic plan: 2.9% ($2.32) + $0.30 = $2.62 in fees, netting $77.38. The same sale on Advanced: 2.5% ($2.00) + $0.30 = $2.30, netting $77.70 — the plan upgrade pays for itself faster at higher volume.
Is it worth upgrading plans just for the lower rate? Only at real volume — the 0.4% difference between Basic and Advanced only outweighs the higher monthly subscription cost once you're processing a meaningful amount in monthly sales. Run your actual numbers before switching.
Do in-person (POS) rates differ? Yes, Shopify POS in-person card rates are typically lower than online rates (around 2.6% + $0.10 on Basic) since card-present transactions carry less fraud risk. This calculator is for online/card-not-present transactions.
